As we were reminded in our recent meeting, there has been little to no national media coverage of Armistice Day, July 27th that temporarily stopped the bloodshed of so many Americans, Koreans and Chinese. We had already lost over 50,000 Americans and thanks to President Eisenhower and his persuasive negotiations (perhaps hint of our still new nuclear arsenal), the Armistice was signed and the war stopped but did not end. Since that day, we have maintained a hefty presence in the area with a whole lot of global reach and global power to maintain that peace. See the following link for further information.

Keep in mind that this war has never ended but it was stopped and can restart at any time which is why we maintain a presence there.

Be sure to THANK A KOREAN WAR VETERAN FOR THEIR SERVICE.

Jr. Vice Commander Jessica Russo received a photo of some members of the CJTF-10/J6 deployed in Afghanistan. This is one of the two units our post has adopted. ​

Their message is: “Here’s a picture of all of us on the roof of our building on BAF. Please extend our many thanks for all of the VFW support for us!!”

Recently Manatee County invited VFW Post 12055 to hold the first ever class regarding the American Flag.

Do you think You Should get into the VA System?

The following is my own personal experience along with some Veterans who originally said “no”.

The VA saved my life in 2013 when I was diagnosed (by VA) with a blocked artery in my heart. Within a week I was on my back in Philly while they attempted to put a stent in or clear the artery. They could not do either – “It was like concrete” was a comment by the doctors. They did “browse” around my heart and saw what is referred to as Coronary Collaterals which means the heart was already responding to my issue.

A few years ago, about 10, I was pushing a friend who lives in Iowa to get into the system. He kept putting that, and me, off until the day he wanted to get me off his back. He signed up and when he had is initial physical they saw that he had effects from Agent Orange. He did not even realize it! He is being treated and receives a monthly disability check from the VA.

Another friend was working along and was doing fine. He also put off getting into the system. Since his heart attack and double by-pass a few weeks ago, he said he regretted the choice of not getting into the system. Especially when he started getting bills for what the insurance did not cover.

So, Think Again if you have not at least attempted to get in the system. Talk to Bill Jackson if you need assistance. (I might be able to help also.)

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian is seeking Native American veterans for a new audio documentary series to highlight their military service. Dear Mr. Davis,

Thank you so much for your time over the phone this morning. As I mentioned, I work for Edelman and we are working in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian to produce an audio documentary series highlighting the lives and military service of Native Americans. The goal of the series is to tell authentic, rich and complex stories that celebrate the role of Native Americans in military life and culture, explore why Native Americans are so often drawn to military service, and shed light on the impact that service has on their lives and communities.

There will be three episodes in the series, each focused on the story of one veteran. Ideally we’d like to feature a variety of stories that highlight different perspectives, potentially featuring different generations of veterans (younger and older), folks who’ve served in different wars and in different branches of service, folks who have a family history of military service and those who do not, people who were career military or those who served for a brief period, individuals whose tribal affiliations run deep or folks whose tribal affiliation is less a part of their identity. We do
expect to travel to collect some of these stories, however, we would be particularly interested folks who reside in the Washington, DC metro area or the region (for example, North Carolina).

Once completed, the series will be posted online including websites owned by the Smithsonian and places like iTunes where people go to listen to audio interviews and stories. The interviews may be heard on radio stations both nationally and locally.
